Two facts bring home the global pandemic we face in myopia incidence: by 2050, 50% of World’s population will have myopia and 10% high myopia; children are becoming myopic at a younger age. All levels of myopia mean an increased risk for retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy. A person who is -6.00DS or more has a risk of retinal detachment 5x and a risk for myopic maculopathy 20x that of a person who is -1.00DS. Even a 1.00DS reduction in myopia has a significant improvement in these risk figures. Controlling myopic progression by 1.00DS reduces risk of myopic maculopathy by 40%, of open angle glaucoma by 20% and visual impairment by 20%.

MiSight (Coopervision) are soft disposable contact lenses designed specifically to control myopia in children. Each lens has two correction zones (refractive correction) and two treatment zones (2.00DS myopic defocus). They are referred to as dual focus contact lenses. The 2.00DS myopic defocus zones prevent the peripheral hyperopic defocus which is thought to be a driver for axial elongation.

Anti-myopia soft contact lenses

A recent study has shown that over 3 years 8-12 year olds wearing MiSight for 10 hours per day for 6 days per week had nearly 0.75DS less myopia progression than a group wearing a standard soft contact lens. This a conversation worth having with the parents of myopic children.
